Biography
1930'larda Noel Coward'ın "Private Lives" oyunundaki başarısı ve Old Vic Tiyatrosu'ndaki döneminde sergilediği Shakespeare performansları, onu İngiliz tiyatrosunun en parlak yıldızı haline getirdi. Sahnedeki fiziksel enerjisi, sesini kullanmadaki ustalığı ve klasik metinlere getirdiği modern yorumlarla "20. yüzyılın en büyük tiyatro oyuncusu" olarak anılmaya başlandı. Sinemadaki ilk deneyimlerinde tiyatro tekniğini perdeye aktarmakta zorlansa da, 1939 yapımı "Uğultulu Tepeler" (Wuthering Heights) filmindeki Heathcliff rolüyle bu engeli aştı ve Hollywood'da büyük bir yıldıza dönüştü. Bunu Alfred Hitchcock'un "Rebecca" (1940) ve "Gurur ve Önyargı" (1940) filmleri izledi.
Olivier'nin sinema tarihindeki en büyük devrimi ise Shakespeare uyarlamalarıyla gerçekleşti. Yönetmenliğini ve başrolünü üstlendiği "V. Henry" (1944) ile özel bir Akademi Ödülü kazandı. Ancak asıl büyük zaferi, hem yönetip hem oynadığı 1948 yapımı "Hamlet" oldu. Bu filmle "En İyi Film" ve "En İyi Erkek Oyuncu" Oscar'larını aynı anda kazanan ilk kişi olarak tarihe geçti. 1955 yapımı "III. Richard" ise birçok eleştirmen tarafından onun en iyi Shakespeare yorumu olarak kabul edildi.
1963 yılında İngiltere'nin en prestijli sanat kurumu olan National Theatre'ın (Ulusal Tiyatro) kurucu sanat yönetmeni oldu. Burada on yıl boyunca görev yaparak Maggie Smith, Robert Stephens ve Anthony Hopkins gibi geleceğin efsanelerini bünyesine kattı ve modern İngiliz tiyatrosunun şekillenmesinde kilit rol oynadı. Kariyerinin sonraki dönemlerinde, John Osborne'un "The Entertainer" (1960) filmindeki Archie Rice rolüyle "öfkeli genç adam" akımına ayak uydurarak yeteneğinin çok yönlülüğünü kanıtladı. 1970'lerde ise "Marathon Man" (1976) filmindeki korkutucu Nazi diş doktoru Dr. Christian Szell rolüyle hafızalara kazındı ve bir Oscar adaylığı daha elde etti.
Kariyeri boyunca dört Oscar (biri onur ödülü), beş Emmy ve üç Altın Küre kazanan Olivier, 1947'de "Sir" unvanıyla şövalye ilan edildi ve 1970'te baro unvanı alarak Lordlar Kamarası'na giren ilk aktör oldu.
Sinema ve tiyatro tarihinin bu anıtsal ismi, 11 Temmuz 1989 tarihinde Steyning, Batı Sussex'teki evinde böbrek yetmezliği ve dermatomiyozit hastalığına bağlı komplikasyonlar nedeniyle uykusunda hayatını kaybetmiştir.
