Biography
"Hâlâ Hollywood'da bulunmamın tek nedeni parayı reddedecek ahlaki cesaretimin olmayışıdır" diyecek kadar cesur, 1972'de The Godfather filmiyle aldığı Oscarı reddedecek kadar da asi biriydi. İkinci Oscarını Amerika'nın Kızılderililere karşı uyguladığı politikayı protesto etmek için ödülü almaya dahi gelmemiştir. On the Waterfront (Rıhtımlar Üzerinde) ile gerçekleştirdiği performansla tüm zamanların en iyi oyuncularından biri olduğunu kanıtladı; ama Brando'nun yakın dostu Elia Kazan'ın da bu başarıda rolü vardı. Elia Kazan film için başta Frank Sinatra ile anlaşmış olmasına rağmen, yapımcı Spiegel'in de etkisiyle Brando'yu başrole koymuştur. Kült filmler arasına giren bir diğer filmi ise "Last Tango in Paris" filminde Bernardo Bertolucci ile çalışmıştır. Filmlerinde kendine has bir tarzı vardı. Bunlardan birkaçı; repliklerini ezberlemeyi reddederdi küçük kâğıtlar kullanırdı. Bir filmde sesinin daha boğucu çıkması için yanaklarına pamuklar doldurdu. The Man (1950) filmindeki Ken Wilcheck rolü için haftalarca tekerlekli sandalyeli gazilerle birlikte olmuştu.
Brando ülkesinde Kızılderili ve siyahların hakları için aktif olarak çalışmıştı. Hollywood sinemasının Kızılderililere karşı tutumunu pek çok yollarla protesto etmiş, düşman edinmiştir. Oğlunun cinayet davasında mahkemede kendisini 'ateist' olarak tanımlasa da, dini inancı bulunduğunu hayatının akışında pek çok yerde belirtmiş, özellikle Kızılderili manevi inançlarına kendini yakın hissettiğini belirtmiştir. Oğlu Michael Jackson'ın korumalarından biriydi. Uyuşturucudan kurtulmaya çalışan kızı intihar etti. 2001 yılında zatürreden dolayı hastaneye kaldırıldı. Empire dergisinin 'Film Tarihinin 100 Seksi Starı' listesine 14. sıradan seçilmişti.
