Biography
Kariyerindeki asıl dönüm noktası, 1939'da Hollywood'a taşınması oldu. Amerika'daki ilk filmi olan Rebecca (1940), En İyi Film Akademi Ödülü'nü kazanarak ona büyük bir başarı getirdi. Bu filmle birlikte Hitchcock, "Gerilimin Ustası" (The Master of Suspense) unvanını perçinlediği efsanevi bir döneme girdi. Sonraki yirmi yıl boyunca, sinema tarihine geçen başyapıtlara imza attı. Şüphenin Gölgesi (Shadow of a Doubt) (1943), Aşktan da Üstün (Notorious) (1946), Ölüm Kararı (Rope) (1948) ve Trendeki Yabancılar (Strangers on a Train) (1951) gibi filmlerle psikolojik gerilim türünü yeniden tanımladı.
1950'ler, Hitchcock'un kariyerinin zirvesi olarak kabul edilir. Bu dönemde çektiği Cinayet Var (Dial M for Murder) (1954), Arka Pencere (Rear Window) (1954), Kelepçeli Âşık (To Catch a Thief) (1955), Ölüm Korkusu (Vertigo) (1958) ve Gizli Teşkilat (North by Northwest) (1959) gibi filmler, hem ticari başarı yakaladı hem de sinematik anlatım ve yönetmenlik dehası açısından ders niteliği taşıdı. Voyeurizm (röntgencilik), suçluluk psikolojisi ve masum bir adamın yanlışlıkla suçlanması gibi temaları ustalıkla işledi. Seyirciye karakterlerden daha fazla bilgi vererek yarattığı gerilim tekniği, onun imzası haline geldi.
1960'ta çektiği Sapık (Psycho), modern korku ve gerilim sinemasının temellerini atarak bir kültürel fenomen oldu. Ardından gelen Kuşlar (The Birds) (1963) ile doğa-korku türünde çığır açtı. Sinema filmlerinin yanı sıra, Alfred Hitchcock Sunar (Alfred Hitchcock Presents) (1955-1965) adlı televizyon dizisiyle de dünya çapında tanınan bir ikon haline geldi. Kendine has cameo'ları (filmlerinde kısa anlarda görünmesi) ile de bilinir. Sanata katkılarından dolayı 1980'de şövalye ilan edildi.
Alfred Hitchcock, 29 Nisan 1980 tarihinde böbrek yetmezliği nedeniyle Los Angeles'taki evinde hayatını kaybetmiştir.
